PAMODZI KUTHETSA NKHANZA PROGRAMME IN MALAWI

BACK GROUND

 

A grant of 4million pounds has been given by FCDO to a Malawi based Consortium comprised of three local women's rights organisations namely Women's Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC), Girls Empowerment Network (GENET) and Human Rights for Women and Girls with Disabilities (WAG) to work on a project called Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza (PKN). The PKN programme which will be implemented over a period of four and half years from 1st November 2023 seeks to reduce the prevalence of four types of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) which includes sexual, physical, economic, and psychological violence.

PROJECT REACH

Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza (PKN) will be implemented in Balaka district in 3 T/As and Lilongwe district in 4 T/As targeting 750000 beneficiaries. It will also implement activities at national level.

APPROACHES IN IMPLEMENTING THE PROJECT

Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza(PKN) will use Evidence based approaches in preventing Violenceagainst women and girls and these include.·

 

  • SASA Together –will use this approach to equip communities so that they can challenge social and gender norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls.·

  • Moyo Olemekezeka- this approach works with families and therefore trainings will be provided to some of the influential members of identified families to prevent violence. It will also have an economic empowerment component for women.·

  • Gender Transformative Curriculum- this will be used by Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza (PKN) to conduct trainings for Formal and Non-Informal Institutions to adopt Gender Transformative perspective in their service provision.·

  • Survivor Support Fund- this fund will cover lodging costs, transport costs, legal assistancecosts for women and girls who are seeking justice and other services.·

  • External Engagement Influencing (EEI)- this will involve engaging with government on prioritization of work on preventing Violence against women and girls.·

  • Media -will also be used in all these activities.

WORK AT NATIONAL LEVEL

  • Will support the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare to convene National level technical working group on Gender Based Violence

  • Support the Police to recruit a Technical Advisor on Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence who will be paid from the project for a period of 4 years and will also support with funds for activities within the police.

  • Will support NGO Gender Coordination Network and Women's Manifesto Movement to convene meetings too on advocacy issues around Intimate Partner Violence

EXPECTED IMPACT AND OUTCOMES

The impact level change will be 'Reduced prevalence of IPV against women and progress towards the full realization of women's human rights.

Expected outcomes include:

  • Survivors of violence are more willing and able to report violence and seek help.

  • People (including traditional and religious leaders, family members and in-laws and wider community members) in the programme's target areas are less tolerant of violence and more supportive of help-seeking from survivors of violence.

  •  Formal and informal violence front-line response services provide more accessible and accountable, survivor-cantered support.

  •  Government of Malawi prioritizes VAWG prevention and improved response efforts based on robust evidence, practice-based knowledge and ethics.
